As part of the cultural season activities at the University of Kerbala and under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Abdul-Hussein Kareem, a seminar titled “The Role of Plant Viruses in Innovating Disease-Resistant Crops Under Greenhouse Conditions: Opportunities and Challenges” was held, presented by PhD student Osayd Abdul-Khader Al-Yassari.
The seminar provided a detailed introduction to plant viruses and their impact on crops, highlighting their dual role. On one hand, plant viruses cause diseases that negatively affect agricultural yields, while on the other, they serve as innovative tools in enhancing crop resistance to diseases, particularly in the era of advanced agricultural technology.
The discussion also covered how plant viruses can be leveraged to stimulate the growth of crops resistant to viruses, bacteria, and fungi, making them more robust and adaptable to challenging environmental conditions.
The seminar concluded with an exploration of the future prospects of plant viruses in modern biotechnology and their potential contribution to achieving sustainable agriculture and ensuring food security for future generations.
