As part of the National Green Project Initiative, the Karbala National Youth Team for Climate Change — one of the formations of the Supreme Youth Council under the Prime Minister’s Office — in cooperation with the Presidency of the University of Kerbala (College of Agriculture), organized a volunteer campaign for systematic planting at the University of Karbala on the morning of Monday, April 28, 2025.

The campaign activities began at the College of Agriculture, with wide participation from university professors and students, in addition to members of the National Youth Team for Climate Change and a number of environmental activists.

The campaign aims to increase the vegetation cover within the university campus, improve the quality of the campus environment, and contribute effectively to addressing climate change challenges by planting various types of trees and local plants suited to the Iraqi environment.

During the launch of the activities, the President of the University of Karbala, Professor Dr. Sabah Wajid, emphasized that the university prioritizes supporting environmental initiatives that contribute to creating a healthy and sustainable campus environment. He pointed out that this campaign represents an important step within the national efforts to confront the effects of climate change and to promote a culture of afforestation among students and the academic community.

For his part, the representative of the National Youth Team for Climate Change, Mr. Brier Ahmed Nasser, explained that the campaign is part of a comprehensive national program targeting universities and educational institutions to enhance the role of youth in climate action and environmental initiatives. He noted that the team seeks to spread the culture of afforestation and environmental awareness across various provinces of Iraq.

The campaign included the planting of many trees in courtyards, walkways, and open areas within the Al-Fareeha campus and the College of Agriculture, with technical and advisory support provided to ensure the continued care of the planted trees.

Additionally, the activities featured short awareness lectures on the importance of vegetation cover, its role in environmental protection, and its contribution to achieving sustainable development goals.

At the conclusion of the event, the University President extended his gratitude and appreciation to the National Youth Team for Climate Change and to all participants for their role in making the initiative a success. He affirmed the university’s ongoing support for environmental and community campaigns and its commitment to continued collaboration with various national institutions across all fields.
