University of Kerbala Organizes a Training Course Entitled “Modern Methods in Controlling Varroa Mite”

The College of Agriculture at the University of Kerbala organized a training course titled “Modern Methods in Controlling Varroa Mite”, with the participation of faculty members: Assistant Professor Dr. Lina Qasim Aidan, Lecturer Dr. Hussein Ali Baqir, and Assistant Lecturer Elaf Imad.
The course aimed to introduce participants to the Varroa mite, highlighting its harmful effects on bee colonies and its significant impact on the productivity of infected hives.

The course also addressed the latest modern methods for combating this mite, such as the use of organic oils, and emphasized the importance of installing monitoring and detection devices. Furthermore, it discussed genetic approaches adopted in some countries to produce bee strains resistant to the Varroa mite.

The course stressed the necessity of enhancing cooperation between agricultural departments and beekeepers’ associations in Iraq to confront this serious pest that threatens the beekeeping industry in our beloved homeland.
