Professor Dr. Adnan Abdul-Jaleel Lahouf and Professor Dr. Rajea Ghazi Abdul-Mohsen, faculty members in the Department of Plant Protection – College of Agriculture / University of Kerbala, in collaboration with postgraduate student Maryam Hashim Musa Al-Hiloo, have obtained a joint patent from the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control, entitled:
“Development of a Bio-Nano Formulation for Controlling Agricultural Pests.”
The research involved developing an innovative bio-nano formulation based on the biocontrol fungus Trichoderma koningiopsis, which was used to produce environmentally friendly zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were characterized using a set of advanced techniques, and the fungal spores were successfully loaded with the nanoparticles. This resulted in the development of a bio-nano formulation enhanced with advanced properties for controlling agricultural pests, in addition to boosting plant resistance to viral, fungal, and insect infections.
This patent highlights the significant potential of integrating biocontrol agents with nanotechnology to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for managing agricultural pests and diseases. It contributes to strengthening plant immunity and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides, in line with the principles of sustainable agriculture and improved production quality.
